The Sue Tonkin Medal (formerly the Saturday Women’s Medal for Medal Winners) was first played in 2020 and named the Sue Tonkin medal in late 2022. All Saturday female monthly medalists for the previous membership year (April to March) are eligible to play for the Sue Tonkin Medal.
Summary on Sue Tonkin
Sue joined Kooyonga in 1972 and the LPGA tour in 1985. She was the SA State Amateur Champion in 1975, 1982 and 1984. She was also SA Girls State Champion in 1975. In 1979 she won the Kooyonga Junior Girls Championship. In 1981 and 1982 she won the Rene Erichsen (a state ranking stroke play event). In 1981 and 1983 she represented Australia in the Tasman Cup (the Australian team won on both occasions) and in 1982, 1983 and 1984 she represented SA. In 1983 Sue won the Victorian Amateur Championship, the Victorian Leongatha Tournament, the NSW Open and finished equal 4th in the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship. Also in 1983 Sue won the Kooyonga Club Championship and repeated the achievement in 1985.
Jane Crafter has stated the following about Sue “…Sue was great competitor with a lot of determination and grit. She was a fantastic teammate both on and off the course and we represented SA a number of times on the same team. She won the SA Amateur 3 times and represented Australia 8 times internationally … She joined the LPGA Tour in 1985. She is one of South Australia’s best players.”
