One of South Australia’s best-credentialed teaching professionals has been appointed the Head Professional at Kooyonga Golf Club.
John Corbett, currently the Head Teaching Professional at Grange Golf Club, will begin work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during July to assist during the transition period to club control of the golf shop.
Following the transition on August 1, John will work an average of 25 hours a week in the shop with the balance of his time set aside for teaching and club fitting.
John was the stand out amongst the strong field of applicants and was Kooyonga’s preferred candidate.
He will now become involved in the selection process for other shop and teaching staff.
John, 31, did his PGA of Australia traineeship over three years at Royal Adelaide. He gained four distinction results in Coaching, Retail and Business Management, Club Technology and the playing component where he averaged a -0.06 under par average through 25 rounds.
He was then appointed Golf Operations Manager at Grange between 2013 and 2014 and was made Head Teaching Professional at Grange from June 2014 to the present time.
An outstanding all-round sportsman, as well as playing on the pro circuit, he won the 2011 South Australian Matchplay Series, played Simpson Cup for Glenelg’s winning team in 2003, played league football for West Adelaide, district cricket for Prospect and captained the South Australian under 23 State Golf team in 2005.
He is excited about plans for a high-tech indoor teaching facility at Kooyonga and is qualified on computerised teaching aids such as Trackman and Flightscope, Sam Puttlab, high speed cameras and balance plates.
John also recognises that not all golfers want to go down the high tech path and he plans to cater for the more traditional teaching methods as well. He is the only professional in SA to work with a physiotherapist on 3-D bio-analysis which helps to measure all physical parameters of a golf swing.
He is a full member of the PGA of Australia and is one of only three professionals qualified as a Titliest Performance Coach Level 1 and is a club-fitting expert with the use of Titliest, Taylor Made, Ping, Cobra, Mizuno, Callaway and Srixon fitting carts.
Club Captain, Grant Raymond, says Kooyonga is extremely fortunate to have secured John Corbett’s services.
“We did have a strong field of candidates including one from interstate but at the interview stage, John emerged as the outstanding candidate. We did put a strong emphasis on qualifications with the various computerised teaching aids because we see the proposed indoor teaching facility as a great way to add value to membership and also to attract new members.
As members will soon learn, John also has outstanding communication skills and we are very much looking forward to him joining us.”
